Week 1 Eagles vs. Jaguars: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

In this post we’ll look over how players performance in the Sunday, September 7th matchup between the Eagles and Jaguars, which ended in a 34 – 17 win for the Eagles. Who did good, and who did bad? Also, we have reserved one spot of shame, The Ugly, for the player who performed the absolute worst:

The Good

Second-Half QB Nick Foles (Philadelphia Eagles): This was a tale of two halves for Foles, who broke out as a star for the Eagles last year. After a dismal performance in the first half (we’ll go over that in The Bad), Foles bounced back and led the Eagles to 34 unanswered points, finishing the game with a healthy 322 passing yards and 2 touchdowns to 1 interception.

DE Flecter Cox (Philadelphia Eagles): Cox was a force against the run, and returned a fumble for a touchdown in the 4th quarter that put this game out of reach for the Jaguars.

WR Allen Hurns (Jacksonville Jaguars): Every team in the league must be kicking themselves for not taking a late-round flier on Hurns in the 2014 draft. Hurns went undrafted and was signed by the Jaguars, and he lit it up during the preseason and made an incredible regular season debut, scoring 2 touchdowns on his first 2 NFL receptions. He ended the game with 4 receptions for 110 yards and his pair of TDs.

Jacksonville’s Defensive Line: Jacksonville head coach Gus Bradley is the former defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, and it’s no secret he is modeling his Jaguars after the recent Super bowl champions. He even brought over some free agents directly from Seattle in defensive ends Red Bryant and Chris Clemons.

His plan appears to working. Jacksonville’s defensive line had 5 sacks on the day and forced 2 fumbles on Nick Foles that twice gave the Jaguars the ball in Eagles territory. In just two offseasons Bradley’s impact on this defense is clear.

The Bad

First-Half QB Nick Foles (Philadelphia Eagles): Foles did not look like a quarterback who only threw 2 interceptions all of last year in Sunday’s game. He surrendered 2 fumbles and threw an interception in the red zone in the first half, and was also generally inaccurate. The Eagles ended up winning the game, but Foles won’t be able to get away with many more victories if he continues to start games like this.

QB Chad Henne (Jacksonville Jaguars):You shouldn’t lose a game when you go into halftime with a 17 – 0 lead. But that’s just what Chad Henne did. You can’t blame it all on Henne, but he needlessly blew a lot of time outs in the second-half and led a sputtering offense to multiple three and out drives. His performance merits the question: How soon will we see Blake Bortles start?

The Ugly

C Jacques McClendon (Jacksonville Jaguars): The Jaguars couldn’t get a run game going, which is exactly what you need to do to burn the clock when you’re up by 17 points. New free agent pickup Toby Gerhart had 42 rushing yards, and as a whole the team finished with just 66 rushing yards between 4 players (Denard Robinson and Jordan Todman had 3 carries each).

The poor run game is due in large part to Jaguars center Jacques McClendon. This was just his third NFL start, and his lack of experience was abundantly clear. He seemed to be driven backwards on nearly every play, and he gave up two penalties as well. The Jaguars must now be especially bitter about not being able to secure the Browns’ Alex Mack in the offseason.
