What the Loss of Eagles’ Guard Evan Mathis Means for Lesean McCoy

Lesean McCoy has knack for making defenders miss and led the league in rushing last year. But as good as he is on his own right, he also benefits from running behind the best run-blocking line in the NFL. In particular, left tackle Jason Peters and left guard Evan Mathis are elite blockers, always clear a wide path for McCoy to run through.

In the Eagles 34 – 17 Week 1 win over the Jaguars, Philly lost multiple offensive linemen to injury. That elite left guard, Evan Mathis, sprained an MCL in his right knee and will be out in recovery for an extended period. Right tackle Andre Barbre, who was already filling in for suspended starter Lane Johnson, suffered a high ankle sprain and will also miss several weeks. The Eagles will be forced to start their third-stringers at right tackle for the next few games. This is sure to have an impact on McCoy’s production.

Am I saying that McCoy is going to have poor production because a couple linemen are out? No, he’s still Shady McCoy. Jamaal Charles and Marshawn Lynch are of a similar talent and run behind even worse o-lines and still they manage to put up good numbers.

But if you’re crafting your weekly roster for a DFS site such as FanDuel, consider that McCoy will have to make do with a little less running room. Other high-salary running backs, such as Adrian Peterson and Demarco Murray, run behind high-quality and still healthy lines and may be the better options for the next few weeks.
