Fantasy Sleeper Profile: QB Ryan Tannehill (Miami Dolphins)

In fantasy football drafts, it is a good strategy to avoid drafting a quarterback early and instead focus on running backs and wide receivers, positions where there is more of a drop off in production from Tier 1 to Tier 2 than there is with quarterbacks. Question is, once you’ve reached the late rounds and big names like Manning, Brees, and Rodgers are off the board and even medium names like Romo and Rivers are also off the board, who should you pick? Well, one name you should consider is Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

The 2012 eighth overall selection by the Dolphins, Tannehill steadily improved in terms of fantasy production from his rookie to his sophomore seasons in the NFL. His rookie campaign was disappointing: just 206 yards per game and an unfortunate 12:13 touchdown to interception ratio. In 2013, Tannehill became a quality QB2 fantasy option, with a healthy 245 yards per game and a much better 24:17 touchdown to interception ratio. He showed a better knack for the big play as well, with ten passes going for over 40 yards in 2013 compared to just three in 2012. Tannehill can pick up yards with his legs also, rushing for 238 yards (average of 6 yards per carry) and a touchdown in 2013.

There are no overwhelmingly talented options at wide receiver on this Dolphins squad. No Calvin Johnson or Julio Jones here. But Tannehill does have a very well-rounded receiver corps, with a pair of above-average receivers in ex-Steeler and viable deep threat Mike Wallace and the unexciting but always productive Brian Hartline. Slot receiver Brandon Gibson and tight end Charles Clay are also reliable pass catchers. Having these good options at receiver will enhance Tannehill’s production.

The biggest thing standing in the way of Tannehill thriving is the poor pass protection he gets from his o-line: he was sacked 58 times in 2013, more than any other QB. Tannehill is sure to be grateful that the front office in Miami addressed this issue with vigor, bringing in an excellent left tackle in Brandon Albert from Kansas City and two high 2014 draft picks in first-round right tackle Jawuan James and third-round guard Billy Turner. If this retooled line can better protect Tannehill, he can be a productive player on your fantasy roster.
