Lovie Smith Finds Himself Once Again In Quarterback Limbo

Lovie Smith’s reputation as the head coach was marked by both a great defense and questionable play at quarterback. His first year as head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is much of the same – minus the great defense.

With a record of 1 – 7, only 4 teams are lower in the NFL standings: the Raiders (0 – 8), the Jets (1 – 8), and the Jaguars (1 – 8). Last Sunday the Buccaneers came close to winning a Week 9 matchup against the Browns, but 2nd-year quarterback Mike Glennon overthrew rookie tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins for a potential game-winning touchdown and the Bucs lost 22 – 17.

That wasn’t Glennon’s only mistake of the day. He was constantly over and underthrowing his talented receiver duo of veteran Vincent Jackson and 2014 first-round pick Mike Evans. Even though Glennon’s stats on the year aren’t too terrible (10:6 TD to INT ratio, a completion percentage just a shade under 60%), he simply makes too many mistakes to win games.

Smith is just as frustrated with Glennon as his fans are. After the game, Smith made a point of not named Glennon the starter next week, saying that the 35-year-old Josh McCown may get a chance to start again. McCown was brought over from Chicago and started for the Bucs this season before an injury thrust Glennon into the starting role. In the handful of games McCown started for Tampa this year, he was just a s bad if not worse than Glennon.

As a defensive guru, Smith would be advised to focus on the great building blocks this team has for the future, namely defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and weakside linebacker Lavonte David, who are among the best in the league at their respective positions. But as of now, shoddy quarterback play is destined to give the Bucs one of the worst records in the league and a Top 10 draft pick come 2015.
