Fantasy Sleeper Profile: WR Kendall Wright (Tennessee Titans)

The Tennessee Titans have not been known for an abundance of playmakers in recent years. Chris Johnson’s production fell off and he now plays for the Jets. The quarterback situation is a mess as well, with Locker showing some promise but also missing 25 games due to injury in his three years in the league.

Kendall Wright is the lone bright spot on this Tennessee squad in terms of fantasy-relevant production (don’t bite on rookie running back Bishop Sankey, who is sure to be overdrafted). Wright is a borderline sleeper, having garnered enough attention for his excellent 2013 campaign that someone is sure to take him in the range of the 50th – 60th overall selection.  But he flashed enough playmaking ability in 2013 to show he has the potential to be worth a 20th – 30th overall selection in 2014, so a sleeper he is.

Wright is dangerous with the ball in his hands. In 2013, he forced 19 missed tackles and put up an average of 6.2 yards after the catch per reception. He also has sure hands, notching 94 receptions for a healthy 1,077 yards. The only disappointing statistic regarding Wright’s 2013 campaign is that he scored just 2 touchdowns on the year. His low touchdown total can be attributed to the fact that, at just 5’ 8”, he is primarily used as a slot receiver. QBs will usually target taller outside receivers and tight ends once they near the end zone.

Another factor you need to consider is the recent change of head coach in Tennessee. Ken Whisenhunt will add an advanced level of creativity to this offense, and he will sometimes use his team’s most dangerous weapon, Wright, in ways he wasn’t utilized in 2013: as an outside receiver and in the red zone. This should lead to more scoring opportunities and resulting touchdowns for Wright in 2014.

One more benefit for Wright: he put up those impressive numbers in 2013 even though for the majority of the season he had the always-underwhelming Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing him the ball. His production seems immune to poor quarterback play, so don’t worry too much about the fairly-likely prospect that Locker gets injured yet again.

The factors are all lined up for Wright to have a 1,200 yards+, 4 – 8 TD campaign in 2014. Once your draft enters the mid-rounds, remember: you can’t go wrong with Wright.
