Fantasy Sleeper Profile: WR Anquan Boldin (San Francisco 49ers)

Yes, Boldin is old. But fantasy owners are overcompensating for that fact by ignoring him completely. In most leagues the draft will reach the double-digit rounds before someone bothers to pick him up. Less talented and productive receivers like Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe, Tennessee’s Justin Hunter, and Pittsburgh’s Markus Wheaton are going just before Boldin. Do yourself a favor and pick up Boldin somewhere in the 90th – 110th overall selection range. He is well worth that selection.

Again, yes, Boldin is old. At 33, his best days would appear to be behind him. But is that really true? Maybe it was just the change of scenery, but last year in his first season playing for San Francisco, Boldin appeared to have aged like fine wine. He finished the 2013 season with 1,179 yards, his highest total since 2006 when he put up 1,203 yards.

There are some legitimate reasons for Boldin falling so far in fantasy drafts despite coming off an excellent season: Expect a slight dip in production now that Michael Crabtree is healthy again. He will also have to compete for targets with Stevie Johnson, a very solid receiver the 49ers picked up from the Bills. Oh, and Boldin is old.

But as good as 49ers receiver corps is, which should reduce Boldin’s production, the rest of the 49ers offense is just as good, which should increase Boldin’s production. If quarterback Colin Kaepernick is healthy, Boldin has a good arm throwing him the ball. The 49ers also boasts one of the top offensive line in the league, so Kaepernick will have plenty of time to go through his progressions and Boldin time to run his routes.

Although he is old, Boldin proved last year he still has it in him to play at a high level for another year or two. Go ahead and ride this train until the wheels fall off.
