Andre Johnson Will Show Up on Time to Camp

So much for a holdout from Houston Texans star wide receiver Andre Johnson. The veteran receiver has been public about his disinterest in playing for a franchise in full rebuilding mode, but is fully expected to still report to Houston’s training camp on time.

Johnson voiced his frustration early in the off-season regarding Houston’s inability to upgrade at the quarterback position, quickly spawning rumors that the long-time Texan may not want to hang around through another losing season.

No one could really blame Johnson, either, as their answer for poor quarterback play was to trade away Matt Schaub (to the Oakland Raiders) and T.J. Yates (to the Atlanta Falcons) and sign Ryan Fitzpatrick. The team also drafted Pittsburgh quarterback Tom Savage in the 2014 NFL Draft, but neither he nor Fitzpatrick resemble the type of quarterback that is likely to lead the Texans further than Schaub previously had.

Naturally, Johnson’s displeasure with the direction the Houston offense was going in led to trade whispers, while the long-time Texan even said he “wanted out” of the organization. Actually getting out proved to be quite an obstacle, however, as few teams are likely to give up much in compensation for a 33-year old number one receiver that is owed a ton of money.

With little leverage and the Texans publicly denying his trade request, Johnson had the decision to either swallow his pride and return to Houston or keep sitting out.

While Johnson showing up for camp is certainly a step in the right direction, it also doesn’t mean everything is just water under the bridge. Johnson could still just be biding his time until Houston finalizes a trade – one in which that likely would need to include an early round draft pick to be done. Anything can happen, as it’s not even August yet, but for now it looks like Johnson will report to camp and remain with the Texans for at least one more season.
