Fantasy Sleeper Profile: San Diego Chargers WR Malcom Floyd

No, not Arizona’s home-run threat Michael Floyd: I’m talking about Malcom Floyd, wide receiver of the San Diego Chargers. Malcom Floyd can be found in the very bottom of most drafts in Rounds 12 – 16 of a 12 team draft. In many leagues he will go undrafted entirely.

But you should consider Floyd because of his advantageous situation. It’s the perfect storm for a wide receiver in San Diego; the team has a great offense and a terrible defense. The Chargers are sure to be behind in many games in 2014, meaning quarterback Philip Rivers will be forced to air it out. Wide receiver production will benefit. After his sensational rookie year Keenan Allen will be River’s No. 1 target next year. But who will be the top receiver next to Allen?

The answer appears to be Malcom Floyd. Floyd missed most of the 2013 season due to injury, and Vincent Brown and Eddie Royal were decent in his place. Floyd is back, and he has displayed sure hands in training camp and turned in solid performances in the preseason. Floyd projects to see the second-most targets among wide outs on the team behind Allen in 2014.

As for Rivers, the aging quarterback appears to be riding the second wind of his career. He was disappointing in 2012 and rebounded with Top 5 QB production in 2013. Expect play somewhere between these two seasons in 2014, which should put him somewhere in the lower half of Top 10 QB production. In other words, if you were a wide receiver in the NFL there are only a handful of QBs you would want throwing you the ball more than Rivers.

Also consider the possibility that Allen’s stellar rookie season was a fluke and he struggles his sophomore year. It wouldn’t be the first time this happened (we’re looking at you, Trent Richardson). In this scenario, Floyd would suddenly jump to No. 1 on the Chargers’ WR depth chart. And you would be the owner in your league with the incredible foresight to have drafted him before the season even began.
