4 Cornerbacks the New York Jets Could Sign

The New York Jets have really had some bad luck in their secondary. They traded away stud corner Darrelle Revis two years ago, cut overpaid corner Antonio Cromartie during the off-season and have realized that former early round pick Kyle Wilson isn’t best as a starter.

Things have only gotten worse, as the team whiffed on a big name cornerback in free agency or the draft, and now have been dealt another blow due to injuries. Number one cornerback Dee Milliner has been lost for several weeks due to a high ankle sprain, while their depth at corner also takes a hit with the season-ending injury to Dexter McDougle.

So, with their backs up against the wall, New York may be in the market for some veteran help off the streets. With some names already starting to rise to the top, let’s take a look at their four best bets:

1. Asante Samuel

Samuel appeared to be regressing quickly with the Atlanta Falcons last year, but has been a very good corner in the past with the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles. He’s surely nearing the end at 33 years old, but he’s a seasoned vet that could still help a solid New York defense. The only problem is Samuel hasn’t signed on with anyone yet because he still wants to be paid like a top corner. He still provides value, so it’s possible Gang Green may have to suck it up and pay him what they want. He has all the leverage.

2. Jabari Greer

Greer had very recently said that he’s “content” with walking away from football, but that could be the take of a disappointed veteran who hasn’t received any strong interest from teams. At 32, he’s past his prime, but Greer was once a top corner with the Saints. He could still have some life in him if he’s fully recovered from a devastating injury he suffered last year. If the Jets come calling, he might listen.

3. Dunta Robinson

Robinson was once a star with the Texans and a solid corner in Atlanta, but flamed out last year with the Chiefs. New York’s system could be good for him, though, and he could still have some gas left at 32 years old. His time is running out, but Rex Ryan knows how to coach corners with talent. He could get something out of Robinson.

4. Corey Webster

Webster has had a shaky career, but for a while was a very solid corner with the Giants. Injuries and off field character concerns have seemingly killed his career at 32 years of age, but Ryan and co. brought in Antonio Cromartie and made him a stud in their system. It’s not crazy to think they could do the same with Webster.
