Knowshon Moreno May Need Knee Surgery

Coming into camp out of shape was the major concern surrounding Miami Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno a week ago. Now it’s about his health.

According to multiple reports, the freshly signed Moreno has been sitting on the sidelines during practice due to a “medical issue”. It’s just recently been made known that the issue has to do with Moreno’s knee, and it’s possible he “may need arthroscopic surgery” to correct the problem.

The reports suggest it’s not a significant injury and nor is the surgery, but it can’t be a good omen for a running back with a history of injuries trying to make a good first impression with his new team. In fact, Moreno’s latest knee issue isn’t even with the one he had surgically repaired thanks to a torn ACL back in 2011, which would now give him issues with both knees moving forward.

Moreno was initially brought in after experiencing a career year with the Denver Broncos in 2013, and was looked at as an upgrade over the mediocrity at the position the Dolphins endured a year ago. Instead, Moreno has dealt with nothing but problems since joining the Fins, as he came into camp out of shape and now may miss extra time leading into the season with a knee issue.

Specifically, Moreno is bound to lose important reps to Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas, and could be in serious danger of losing his once expected starting role. Only signed to a fairly cheap one-year deal, Moreno can’t really afford to come to Miami and have a lost season. Should that happen, his market value would be destroyed once he becomes a free agent again in 2015.

While it’s not good news, it’s still not the end of the world. Moreno was still a highly productive player again, while surgery on the knee now would hypothetically just make him stronger for the start of the season. That may make his role a bit uncertain to get things going, but hopefully he’ll be fresh and ready to help make the Miami running game stronger than it was a season ago.
