Giants Cut Ties With Troubled Safety Will Hill

The New York Giants have reportedly decided to cut ties with star safety Will Hill. Hill was handed a six-game suspension for the 2014 NFL season for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy, giving him three league suspensions since entering the league in 2012.

Big Blue has apparently grown tired of Hill’s recklessness and have decided to let him go, placing him on waivers on Monday afternoon. A very balanced and effective player on the field, Hill grades out at an elite level and isn’t likely to last long on waivers.

Whoever brings Hill in will have to deal with the potential headache of a talented player that will never keep his off field issues in check, but the best case is an All Pro safety that can dramatically improve a defense.

Hill will obviously sit out the first six regular season games for whoever he suits up for next, but as long as he gets his mind right the rest of the way, that new team will be getting a stud safety for the other 10 games.

The first team on deck to decide whether or not Hill is worth the trouble is the Houston Texans thanks to a 2-14 finished in 2013. Houston had major problems at safety a year ago, but looks to stick with D.J. Swearinger and a combination of Kendrick Lewis and Chris Clemson. The next team in line would be the Washington Redskins, which could really make for an interesting story-line. Not only do the Redskins have a long-term need at safety, but Hill would be playing in the same division as the Giants and would get the chance to face them twice a year.

The Jaguars would be third in line after Washington, but even if Hill doesn’t get picked up within the first three picks, he’s unlikely to last on the waiver wire for very long.

The Giants, meanwhile, are fully expected to revert back to a safety pairing of Stevie Brown and Antrel Rolle. Brown will man the free safety spot, with the versatile Rolle locking down strong safety. Rolle has had his issues in pass coverage in the past, but both he and Brown offer elite play-making ability. The G-Men could do worse at the safety position.
