Cardinals QB Carson Palmer Signs 3-Year Extension
The Cardinals believe quarterback Carson Palmer is their answer at quarterback for the next few years, signing him to a 3-year, $50 million including incentives ($20 million guaranteed) contract extension.
Palmer’s decade-long career in the NFL has taken some twists and turns over the years. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted him first overall in 2003, and in his first few years in the league Palmer was one of the best quarterbacks in the league and managed to make the Bengals a legitimate playoff contender.
In 2008 Palmer missed nearly the entire season due to injury and when he came back he was not as productive. Arizona let him go and he spent a couple of forgettable years in Oakland before being dropped once again.
Last season was Palmer’s first as a Cardinal, and this season he is playing as well as he did when he first entering the league, with a mid-season statline of 11 touchdowns to 3 interceptions and a completion percentage of 61.7%. Palmer has played well but he can thank these big numbers to the great situation he is currently in, with future Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald and viable deep threat Michael Floyd as his receivers and one of the league’s best pass-catching running backs in Andre Ellington. The Cardinals also have one of the league’s best defenses, so Palmer does not often face the interception0inducing pressure of playing from behind.
With a record of 7 – 1, the Cardinals boast the best record in the NFL, being the only team remaining to have only lost one game. With that kind of success, it’s easy to see why Arizona was so eager to resign Palmer.
