Rams Plan to Sit Davis and Start Shaun Hill at Quarterback

Austin Davis’s Cinderella story is over, at least for now. Davis took over for the oft-injured former first overall pick Sam Bradford, and he played well at the start of his tenure. As a run-first team with Zac Stacy and Tre Mason, the Rams didn’t much out of Davis but some solid play and minimal turnovers.

In his first 5 games Davis played well, flashing a quality deep ball for breakout receiver Brian Quick (now out for the season) and tossing 7 touchdowns to 4 interceptions. He also put up a couple 300-yard games against the Eagles and the Cowboys.

His great play met its climax in the Rams’ upset win over the Seahawk’s Super Bowl-winning, historically-great secondary. He threw 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions for a 138 QB rating, much to the chagrin of Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and company.

Then Davis’s performance started to decline, throwing for 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and just 470 yards over 3 games. The Rams had a chance to win going into the 4th quarter this Sunday against the Cardinals. But then the pass rush got to Davis and he threw 2 interceptions and also fumbled the ball once. It turns out that abysmal quarter was the final straw for the Tennessee front office.

Now the Rams will take a shot with Shaun Hill, who isn’t a terrible backup quarterback but doesn’t bode well as a potential franchise quarterback. Currently with a poor record of a 3 – 6, the Rams appear to be in position for a Top 10 or even Top 5 pick in 2015. They may want to give Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston a look.
