Giants RB David Wilson Dealing With Neck Issue Again

David Wilson didn’t even last a full week. Fresh onto the practice field after recently being medically cleared from a neck injury that threatened his career and cost him the majority of his 2013 season, Wilson is once again on the shelf with a neck issue.

According to various reports, Wilson sustained a “neck burner” in the New York Giants practice on Tuesday, after he fell head first into the back of another player. A “burner” or “stinger” is merely a burning or stinging sensation left over in the neck after an impact. Usually not overly serious, it’s the exact opposite in this case, as it took Wilson multiple tries to get medically cleared to resume football activities.

It’s a freak happening, but it’s absolutely cause for concern – especially considering the G-Men were fully planning on installing Wilson into their weekly game plan.

Plans to do that will be put on hold until at least August 4th, when Wilson will reportedly be reevaluated. Wilson will sit out the remaining days of practice this week and has officially been ruled out of Sunday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.

Wilson will be looked at by Dr. Frank Cammisa on Monday, the very doctor who performed Wilson’s neck surgery. Wisely exercising caution, the Giants could potentially hold Wilson out for much (if not all) of the preseason if cleared by Cammisa. Obviously, if Wilson isn’t cleared, it could spell the end to a once promising NFL career.

Wilson took the league by storm as a kick returner and change of pace weapon as a rookie in 2012, and entered last year with high hopes as New York’s lead rusher. Unfortunately, Wilson lost two fumbles in the first game of the season and really never escaped head coach Tom Coughlin’s doghouse. Wilson struggled to find his footing the rest of the way until he was injured in week six and ultimately put on injured reserve due to his neck issue.

Thought to be fully healthy, Wilson is already back on the shelf and could be looking at the end of his career. Wilson and all of the Giants’ fans will be collectively holding their breath as they wait for the verdict next Monday.
