Fantasy Sleeper Profile: WR Reggie Wayne (Indianapolis Colts)

It is entirely reasonable to be wary of picking old players in your fantasy draft. Even so, fantasy owners tend to overcompensate for this fact by ignoring some productive players just because they are the wrong side of 30. This is the case with Reggie Wayne, a future hall of fame receiver who is falling all the way to the 80th – 100th overall selection range.

Okay, so Wayne is very far on that wrong side of 30. He crossed that line and then kept walking for a few miles. At 35 years old, I’m pretty sure he can go ahead and register for AARP.

But consider this: you would think about the same thing about a 33 year old receiver, right? Well, in 2012, when Wayne was that age, he totaled 1,355 yards for the season. In 2013, when Wayne was 34, his season was cut short to 7 games due to injury, but in those 7 games he totaled 503 yards. If he played the whole season out, he was on pace for yet another 1,000 yard plus season (he has had 8 of those in his career). It can’t last forever, but Wayne has shown that he has the longevity to put in another 1,000 yard season in 2014.

Sure, the Colts added Hakeem Nicks from the New York Giants in the offseason and T.Y. Hilton has emerged as a viable threat in the slot. But make no mistake: Wayne is still the clear-cut No. 1 WR on this team. Forget about the age issue: picking up a No. 1 receiver, especially one on a team with a quarterback as talented as Andrew Luck, in the eighth round of your fantasy draft is an absolute steal.
