Fantasy Sleeper Profile: QB Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Many football players get written off as they get old. There is sense to this logic, as the NFL is certainly a young man’s game: it’s difficult to think of any other context in which a man in his mid-thirties is considered incredibly old.

There is a lot of fantasy value that can be found in players that are past the 30 year mark but, despite the odds, still look to have a few productive years ahead of them. One such player is longtime Steelers quarterback, the Super Bowl-winning Ben Roethlisberger.

Despite his image as a declining quarterback, for the 2013 season Roethlisberger finished in the top 10 in many statistical categories regarding NFL quarterbacks:  he had the 7th most passing TDs (28), the 7th highest completion percentage (64.2%), and the 9th most passing yards (4,261). He also had just 14 interceptions in the year, meaning he had a healthy, exact 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio.

Roethlisberger also has one distinct advantage over most quarterbacks: a truly elite receiving threat. During the 2013 offseason Pittsburgh let Mike Wallace float away to free agency to Miami and decided to lean on Antonio Brown as their No. 1 receiver. Brown proved last year that he is not just a capable No. 1 receiver for the Steelers, but one of the top 5 best receivers in the entire NFL.

Just look at how Brown fared among all receivers for the 2013 NFL season. He had the second-most receiving yards with 1,499 yards (7 more than Calvin Johnson) and the third-most completions for more than 20 yards with 23.

The Steelers picked up Lance Moore from the New Orleans Saints in the 2014 offseason, adding a worthy complement to Brown, which is necessary as after his huge season last year teams will be keying in on Brown. Roethlisberger has all the tools and weapons he needs to succeed in 2014.
