Broncos Pro Bowl Kicker Matt Prater to Miss First 4 Games of 2014 Season

With a team featuring arguably both the best quarterback and the best pass rusher in the game (Peyton Manning and Von Miller), it’s easy to overlook the Broncos’ other talented players. One such player is the team’s kicker, Matt Prater, who earned a spot in the 2013 Pro Bowl by connecting on 25 of 26 attempts for a league-high 96.2 field goal percentage.

Prater will miss the first quarter of the 2014 regular season after violating the league’s substance abuse policy with an alcohol-related incident. Prater entered the league’s alcohol program after he was charged with a DUI in 2011. In 2014, Prater drank some alcohol in his home during a vacation, leading to a positive drug test and this suspension. Prater accepted a 4-game ban after initially being threatened with a suspension lasting the entire 2014 season.

This incident is one of many that have the public questioning the fairness of the NFL’s suspension sentencing policy. It just doesn’t seem right that a man physically abusing his wife (the Ray Rice elevator incident) only gets only a 2-game suspension, when a man harmlessly consuming a legal substance in his own home is suspended for twice as long. Maybe reform is on the horizon, but for now Prater is happy to serve a 4-game ban rather than the possible season-long suspension.
